BIG FLAVOUR - small pils

Five years ago we set out on a journey to brew full flavoured British lagers using traditional German and Czech brewing techniques. By using higher nitrogen malt, decoction mashing, and low temperature fermentations we try to coax flavour and body out of relatively simple recipes.

For this reason, we haven’t brewed a ‘light’ lager, or adjunct lagers using corn or rice because we believe strongly that good beer should have flavour, texture and bitterness. That said, we do recognize that sometimes big flavour, without a high alcohol content can be a wonderful thing and as beer drinkers in the UK have continued to look for independently made, flavour-forward, lower alcohol beers we decided to challenge ourselves to brew a Czech inspired lager, at 3.4% ABV.

We hope you enjoy drinking it as much as we enjoyed brewing it !

Small Pils has been brewed with Pilsner, Vienna and caramel malts, to give the beer a deep golden colour, and using an intensive double decoction mash to bring out the cereal and bread crust aroma of the malts. We used a generous helping of one of our favourite hops to come out of the Charles Faram breeding program, Harlequin®, which is wonderfully floral and fruity.
